  • Einde Van Die Dae - Kaal

  • Ek en Jy en die Highway - Valiant Swart

  • Ek's Verlief - Drop Dead Gorgeous
One of the Afrikaans tracks off the bilingual 'Melt With Me' CD by Drop Dead Gorgeous. This is a slow-ish, powerful and intriguing love song featuring the soaring vocals of Michelle Steynberg. (BC, January 2004)
  • Ek en Jy In Die Kaap - Lize Beekman

  • Electric Train - The Blues Broers

  • Elements Of Dance - DJ MacAngel
By kind permission of DJ MacAngel

  • Elevated State Of Grace - Mr. Mo & G-Steel

  • Elungelo - RSL featuring Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Ever wonder what African traditional a cappela vocals would sound like mixed with UK Drum 'n Bass? Two pale-faced English boys known as RSL meet the Zulu Mbube sound of Grammy-award winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo. And it works... taken off the 1998 Fresh Music compilation CD 'Re-Rooted'. [BC, April 2003]
  • The Enemy Within Me - HappyFourTwenty

  • Engel Met 'n Angel - Amanda Strydom
Amanda rocks out on this track off her lastest CD. The angel of the title is addicted to rock 'n roll and nicotine and she rides much too fast. Who is this song actually about then, I wonder...? (BC, October 2003)
  • Everytime - State Far Better

  • Extra Larry - Sons Of Trout
From 'Odd Times', by kind permission of Sons of Trout.

  • Fabulous Day (Kwaito mix) - Redd Angel
Redd-Angel has recently been playlisted on the UK's most important London Radio Station CAPITAL RADIO with his South African hit record 'Fabulous Day' (Digest #3 in November 2001). "South African music is at last making serious inroads into the overseas music scene," says his manager Unie Moller.

Moller has very kindly authorized the Gabi le Roux Kwaito mix of 'Fabulous Day' for SAmp3.com. So get ready for a redd-hot summer by listening to the infectious sounds of Redd-Angel. [BC, August 2003]
  • Face - Ystervark
Second release from Ystervark, Bloemfontein's finest rock band off their 'Living It Up' EP. 'Let Me Know' has had a good run on the SAmp3 Charts and 'Face' will bring more fans round to this emerging band's rough rock style. (SS, October 2003)
  • Fallacy - Not My Dog
"Fallacy is the first track to be released featuring Not My Dog's new vocalist Albert Meintjes. The band is busy writing and recording new material for their next album due for release late 2003." - Lani van der Walt
Lani is the guitarist on Jack Hammer's 'Death Of A Gypsy' album, and producer for Piet Botha's latest CD 'Die Mamba'. He also added his guitar skills to the track 'Die Gemmerbroodman'.
'Fallacy' is available on SAmp3.com by kind permission of Lani van der Walt and Not My Dog (Wolmer Records). [Not My Dog] [BC, July 2003]
  • Fallen - Velve
Emotional and tuneful grunge from Cape Town's Velve. Currently picking up a lot of airplay on 5FM, and sounding BIG! [SS, June 2003]
  • FCK - Teba
This track by Teba ("the original social worker") is off the new 'Silvertab Harambe Dope Sessions' collection on the African Dope label.
  • Festival Song (live) - Fly Paper Jet

  • FFF - Tonight We Die
Tonight We Die is the name of a band which we know very little about, but who are making a big impression here at Digest Towers with this demo we received recently. 'FFF' is hard-rock with acoustic guitars and soaring dual male vocals. Possible influences could include The Mars Volta and their earlier incarnation, At The Drive-In with maybe a bit of System Of A Down thrown in for good measure. Hope to hear a lot more from these guys. (BC, April 2004)
  • Fidelity - Baobab

  • Firelight - Brian Finch
A song about friendships and firelight. A slow and powerful rock song which is a wonderful vehicle for Brian's deep, rich voice. The gorgeous flute playing of Pola Loubnina really adds to this song as well. Taken off Brian's latest CD 'Never Look Back'. [BC, June 2003]
    (Brian Finch)
  • Fishes Of Men - Metalmorphosis

  • Fokofpolisiekar - Fokokpolisiekar
Afrikaans punk rock with oodles of attitude. Fokofpolisiekar launched their debut album 'As Jy Met Vuur Speel Sal Jy Brand' ("If you play with fire, you'll get burnt") on Friday 5th December at the Mercury Live in Cape Town. This raucous self-titled track with explicit lyrics is not on the album and is exclusively available to download at SAmp3.com. (December 2003)
  • Fool For Lesser Things - Rubber Soul

  • Forget About You - Boulevard Blues Band
By kind permission of Trippy Grape

  • Fragile - Venessa Nolan

  • Fragile - Idle Minds

  • Free - David Michael
Track from his debut CD 'Everything You Hear Is True'. Free with SA Rock Digest Issue #159, by kind permission of David Michael.

  • Freedom - Citrus
By kind permission of Benjy Mudie of Fresh Music

  • Freedom / Motherless Child - Brian Finch
This song is probably best known for its awesome performance by Richie Havens in the Woodstock movie. Anyone who has seen Brian Finch in concert over the last few years will know that Brian has taken the spirit of Havens' version and stamped his own signature all over it. The name-checking tour of Africa is worth the price of admission alone. [Brian Finch] [BC, August 2003]
  • Funk The World - Roboto Da Funk

  • Gal Of I Dream - Tim Parr featuring Zoro
Tim Parr has had a wonderful, eclectic history in South African music. He was part of the brilliant bluesy Baxtop with Larry Amos, he rocked big-time in the 80's with EllaMental fronted by the striking Heather Mac. In the 90's he was producing some experimental sounds with the Colorfields. And here he is teamed up with Zoro and an unusual slow reggae sound. Taken off the 'African Dope Soundsystem' CD. (BC, April 2004)
  • Game Over (Love Fool) - Alexis

  • Gangsta - Delta Blue
A cool instrumental funky jazz blues song off the stunning 'Inbluesstation' CD from Stellenbosch band Delta Band.
    More Delta Blue mp3s >>>
  • Gangsta - Kalahari Surfers
By kind permission of African Dope

  • Gangsta - The Rudimentals
The Rudimentals are currently one of the hottest bands on the Cape Town circuit, creating dance mania wherever they perform with a powerful blend of ska, punk, and plenty of indigenous influences to keep the mix broad and interesting. The group's debut album, 'More Fire' is proving to be a strong seller and the group have just released the first track off the album as an mp3 download. The song is the popular live track 'Gangsta', and is a dynamic intro to the sound of the "Rudies". (SS)
  • Geek - Jakkie Louw en Daai Band
Jakkie Louw: vocals, acoustic guitar/ Charl Bruwer: drums/ Gavin Cannone: bass/ Quinton Jansen: lead guitar/ Jeannine Marais: violin/ Guy Veldsman: guitars

So you thought Jakkie Louw only sang in Afrikaans... think again. "I wish I was a rock star... but I'm a gah-heek". Taken from 'Klein Karoo Cowboy' (Afrimusik). [BC, June 2003]
  • Georgia - Sitter
No, this is not a cover of the old classic 'Georgia On My Mind', but rather a very catchy Blink182 style song. Altogether now "Her name's Georgia, whoaah..."
  • Geraamtes - Ekstra Dik

  • Geraamtes In Jou Kas - Brixton Moord en Roof Orkes
By kind permission of Roof Bezuidenhout, Brixton Moord en Roof Orkes and Rhythm Records

  • Get Ready - Swamp Funk Quartet
By kind permission of Ted Baumann

  • Get Your Juices Going - Starburst

  • Getting Better - Scabby Annie
By kind permission of Dave Chislett

  • Getting Stronger - SteveVan

  • Gimme Da Weed - Juan Thyme feat. Chronic Clan
You loved the 'African Dope Volume 1' collection, were blown away by the following 'Cape Of Good Dope' compilation, and now we have the third in the series with the release of the 'African Dope Sound System'. This is Juan Thyme and the Chronic Clan making their intentions clear with this ode to um, African dope.
  • Die Gipsy In Jou Oë - Anna Davel
A brave and very different reworking of the Koos Kombuis/Piet Botha song which first appeared on Piet Botha's 'Suitcase Vol Winter' album with vocals by Koos Kombuis. In this new version the song sounds like it was recorded around a gypsy campfire with all the images that that comment conjures up. The bouzouki is played by Greg Georgiades. [BC, April 2003]
  • Girl - Myburgh
From Big Brother fiancé to "Burnt Bachelor", Myburgh covers that emotional minefield with resignation but no regrets. Some sweet pop that will nag at your heart for days. [SS, June 2003]
  • Girls In Black - Kelvin Declined
From the debut and self-titled Kelvin Declined CD. Free with SA Rock Digest Issue #161, by kind permission of Jürgen von Wechmar, Kelvin Declined and Rhythm Records.

  • Gistraand om Dusketyd - Laurinda Hofmeyer
    By kind permission of Afrimusik

  • Glove - Blues Broers

  • God's Window - Egyptian Nursery
By kind permission of Benjy Mudie of Fresh Music

  • Goeienag Generaal (Live) - Jack Hammer
By kind permission of Piet Botha, Pofadder Records & Intervention Arts
The real story behind the Border War - not for sensitive listeners. And if you would like to read the real and previously untold story get 'The Days Of The Generals' by Hilton Hamann, published by Struik (Zebra) from Kalahari.net. [August 2002]
  • Gommora Sampler - Gommora

  • Gone Away - Sam Paddock
We received this demo EP from a new Cape Town singer-songwriter called Sam Paddock and felt you really need to hear the first single, called 'Gone Away', which is a moving ballad about an African child's loss of his mother. Sam is a 22 year-old student, currently completing his honours year of a Bachelor of Business Science degree at the University of Cape Town.

During his school years, Sam played in a band called Cold Turkey, as well as numerous variety shows and band-slams by himself. Since matriculating he has made various live appearances and also plays an acoustic set at a local folk club from time to time.

The Demo was recorded at Tracking Station, and features the tracks 'Gone Away', 'Scars and Reasons', 'You', and 'Literally'. (SS, February 2004)
  • Got The Time - Serving Suggestion
Alternative Pop Punk the way your grandmother never liked it! [Solarpop, August 2003]
  • Gracious Creature - The Narrow

  • Grapevine - Luna
Unrelated to Marvin Gaye's 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' except in it's soulful delivery. This slow, bluesy song is about saying goodbye to a cheating lover and you can really feel Luna's pain as her voice floats above the superb instrumental backing. Shine on. [BC, April 2004]
  • Grateful - Serving Suggestion
By kind permission of Tim Smal
Loud but not too energetic. It's punk rock with an almost ska feel. Reminds me of Tweak or Offspring. [Curmic, July 2003]
  • Gravity - James Stewart

  • Guitar Me - Staige

  • Hands Down - Track4

  • Hanging Out With Dave - Scabby Annie
By kind permission of Dave Chislett

  • Heksery - Laurinda Hofmeyr

  • Hemel Op Die Platteland - Fokofpolisiekar

  • 'n Hemel Vol Blou Akkers - Anton Goosen

  • Here Be Dragons (demo) - Tuesday's Child
Free with SA Rock Digest Issue #163, by kind permission of Craig Strachan and Tuesday's Child.

  • Hey Mr DJ - Caytie Marvelis

  • Hillary - Mitsoo
A classic old school chick-punk-trio from Cape Town, with influences all the way from the Slits to Sleater-Kinney. This is a short, blasting tribute to Hillary Clinton, depending on how you view the word "tribute" though (we know about the "ugly lovechild", but does she really have an "alien lover"??). True to the spirit of '77 when rock songs were short, fast, and screamed! Pay attention boys! [SS, July 2003]
  • Hoenderman - Kobus!
Track from their debut CD 'Kobus!'. Free with SA Rock Digest Issue #158, by kind permission of Kobus! and ENT Music.

  • Hole Song - Syd Kitchen

  • Holy Water Sampler - Wendy Oldfield

  • Hoochie Coochie Man (live) - Delta Blue
From 'Delta Blue Live', by kind permission of Afrimusik

  • House (mix) Of The Rising Sun - Hot RS II
HOT RS was a studio band formed by Kevin Kruger and Dan Hill in 1977. And here they are again revisiting that infamous house, re-recorded and remixed for the 21st century. This new version, which features the voice of Veronique Lalouette, is available on the EMI CD, HOT RS II - I Get So Excited. The mp3 appears here by kind permission of Kevin Kruger. Be warned, this track is very HOT! [HOT RS] [BC, July 2003]
  • How Can You Tune Me Nooit When I Tune You It's Cool - Valiant Swart
An acoustic folk-blues song (sung in English) from Valiant Swart's first album 'Dorpstraat Revisited' (1996) recently re-issued by Rhythm Records. This song competes for "the mp3 with the longest title" award but is still beaten (by 3 letters) by The Radio Rats with 'In The Minimum Amount Of Time I Want To Make You Mine' (42 letters). [BC, April 2003]
  • Human Being - Springcan

  • Humanarium - Bed on Bricks
Great band name and even better first single from this new addition to the SA music scene. Bed On Bricks boasts Sons of Trout vocalist Mike Hardy, bassist Schalk van der Merwe, drummer Tim Rankin, and Dave "The Bunny" van de Linden on lead guitar. 'Humanarium' is an auspicious opening release, dealing as it does with a man carrying a Goldfish around in a plastic bag in Cape Town, and what happens after that. And a "humanarium" is similar to an aquarium!!

A surreal and sharp song that moves to a crisp and cool jazzy riff that recalls the best of the Honeymoon Suites.

Bed On Bricks are finishing off their first album after a few months of very well-received live gigs in Stellenbosch, Cape Town and surrounds. Mike Hardy's Sons Of Trout bandmates are all over the globe at the moment, so Bed On Bricks gives him a fresh platform for his songs until the "Trouts" pick up their careers again. (SS, August 2003)
  • Hush - The Rock Rebels
Bobby Louw: vocals, PJ Powers: vocals, Bill Flynn: vocals, Myles Shannon: guitars, Denny Lalouette: bass, Kevin Kruger: drums, Danny Antill: keyboards

This track was composed by Joe South (born Joseph Souter, 28th Feb 1940, Atlanta, Georgia). Released on a single by Deep Purple it reached number 4 in the USA in September 1968, achieving the first million-selling single for both composer and artist.

Originally recorded by Billy Joe Royal (and produced by South) in October 1967 reaching US #52. Also recorded by Joe South himself, and released as a single in 1970 and on 'The Best Of Joe South' in 1990. Recorded by Kula Shaker in May 1997 in a very similar style to Deep Purple's version and released as the title track of a CD single which went to #2 in the UK. Cape Town band Desert Velvet also play an awesome version of 'Hush' at their live gigs. [BC, September 2002]
  • I Don't Have To Crawl (demo) - Susan May

  • I Guess This Is The New South Africa - Biff & Jethro
A quote from the Amuzine website 15 May 1998: "Still haven't found out who Biff and Jethro are or who "Biff's Friend" is who adds those jazzy la-las to the end of this intelligent, pertinent and damn fine, hip hop, anti-SA-crime protest blast." - Stephen Segerman

Its lyrics include: "I guess this is the new South Africa/You work for your car/And they take it from ya/I guess this is the New World/It's the law of the jungle".

Looks like nothing has changed; we still don't know who Biff and Jethro are (or were) and SA-Crime is still uncontrolled. This song was pulled from radio-play for being "too negative" and "undemocratic" (huh?). Authorized for SAmp3.com by Benjy Mudie from Fresh Music. [BC, April 2003]
  • I Have The Blues - Kaal

  • (I Think I Can) Relate (acoustic) - Tait
By kind permission of Fresh & Street Level

  • I Would Do Anything - Alpha Set
By kind permission of James Stewart from Street Level.

  • I'd Rather Be Sad Than Happily Married - Blues Broers

  • I'll Remember You - Brian Finch
From 'Hero Of Heroes', by kind permission of Brian Finch.

  • I'm A Doctor - The Innovators
This hiphop song from the African Dope label starts with some Far-Eastern instrumentation and what sounds like a Japanese man speaking backwards. So sort of an East meets West kind of thing, then. And you'll soon be rapping along to, 'I'm a doctor, stick a needle in your butt, let me operate'. Be cured. (BC, April 2004)
  • I'm A Man - Swamp Funk Quartet
By kind permission of Ted Baumann

  • Immigrant Song - Not My Dog

  • Impressed - My Shade
'Impressed' is not as heavy as the band's other tracks and therefore appeals to my tastes a little more. It is different from other heavy metal band tracks in that the lyrics are clear and the "casual" listener can easily pick up the lyrics and be caught up in the chorus and melody. (Tony de Buys, September 2003) [ZAZone.com]
  • Joint State In The Mirror - Joint State
Tons of energy in this classic rock track off this hot new band's debut album, 'Nothing Works Like Water'. Read more »»
  • In The Minimum Amount Of Time I Want To Make You Mine - The Radio Rats
From 'Music For Funerals', by kind permission of Jonathan Handley of the Radio Rats

  • Inbetween - Language

  • Incision - Pyramid Tongue

  • Ingoma - Khumbula

  • Inner Space - Ken E Henson

  • Inside Your Sun - Sharkbrother

  • (Ipi 'N Tombi) The Warrior Sampler - Ipi 'NTombi feat. Margaret Singana

  • Irish Crap - DNA Strings
From 'DNA Strings', by kind permission of Afrimusik

  • I've Been Waiting - Bridgitte
There is a lot of interest in this new emerging Cape-based R ‘n B star-in-training. This is Bridgitte’s impressive opening shot off her new album ‘I’ve Been Waiting’. [July 2004]

  • Jack Hammer Sampler - Jack Hammer
A medley of 3 Jack Hammer classics: 'January's Son', 'Welcome To Azania' & 'Sarajevo'. [Jack Hammer]
  • Jackie - Eugenie

  • Jacob Klipkop - Piet Botha
A song that bravely tackles the effects that the Border War had on the returning soldiers. Jacob Klipkop struggles with civvie life and what was he really fighting for, and why did so many of his friends have to die. The haunting lyrics are offset by Piet's cheerful whistling, which makes this song even more poignant. Piet namechecks a few places that will bring goosebumps to many, like "Ondangwa" and "Ovamboland". [PietBotha] (Rhythm Records) [BC, July 2003]
  • Jaded Mind - Morning Haze
Morning Haze's spiky little punk-rock track immediately grabbed my attention and affection due to it bringing back warm memories of 'Another Girl Another Planet', one of UK punk's finest moments courtesy of The Only Ones. Not sure if this young SA band have ever heard that classic, and 'Jaded Mind' is clearly an original song, but Morning Haze have managed to capture all the no-frills, emo-fizz of those days and have a potential hit on their hands. The track needs a slicker production, but its demo rough-edgedness is definitely part of its charm.

Morning Haze are Will (vocals, rhythm), EM (bass, backing vocals), Phil (lead), and Jason (drums) and the band has been together in this form since October 2002. The band have just released their debut 'Coming Up' demo EP and their sound has been described as "angst-driven rock and punk with a strong emphasis on variation, innovative melodies, guitar riffs and lyrics". Other songs on the EP are 'Special' and 'Need', but 'Jaded Mind' got the nod as the first single to be released as an mp3 download and for that you should be grateful! (SS, August 2003)
  • James Brown (I Ain't) - Martin Rocka
The spirit of Bo Diddley lives on in Wonderboom's Martin Rocka. In fact Bo Diddley, who was born in 1928, is still alive and performing! 'James Brown' is classic, straight-ahead rock and roll boogie with raunchy lyrics and an irresistable foot-stompin' beat. [BC, April 2003]
  • Jammez - Zen Arcade
From 'Letter From A Friend' CD single. Free with SA Rock Digest Issue #164, by kind permission of Zen Arcade

  • Je T'adore - Vaseline Rats
Mike de Jager: guitar/ Mike Emms: vocals, bass/ Pauly: drums

Pete Emms is the driving force behind UK rock band, the Vaseline Rats, and with ex-pat South African Mike de Jager they are working hard at writing, producing & recording new material for an album due for release soon. Pete was the bass player for Alan Atkins, the original Judas Priest front man. Drummer Pauly is dynamite behind a kit and is a born and bred rock/metal drummer... and a Satriani fan of note. [November 2003]
  • Jeff - Sons Of Trout

  • Jeffreysbaai - Piet Botha
A fond instrumental tribute to the surfer's paradise of J-Bay which closes Piet's lastest CD 'Die Mamba'. Leon van Zweel blows the sax.

This wonderful spot between Knynsa and Port Elizabeth has been an inspiration for many... take a listen to Brian Finch's 'Song To Jeffrey's', Jamie Jupiter's 'The Blue (J-Bay)' and Silver Creek Mountain Band's 'Jeffrey's Bay'. [PietBotha] (Rhythm Records) [BC, July 2003]
  • Jeffrey's Bay - Silver Creek Mountain Band
This gentle acoustic song performed live by the Silver Creek Mountain Band in 1990 is taken off the '10 Years of Splashy Fen' live compilation CD by kind permission of Dave Marks. [3rd Ear Music] [BC, August 2003]
  • Jerk Motormouth - Michael Payne
This 21-year old began in high school with bands like Purple Monkeys, Camba, and Sonic Vison, but left to learn to play guitar, drums and bass so that he could record his debut EP all by himself (he wrote the songs as well!). The self-funded 5-track EP called 'DeCOMpress' features Payne's original compositions, reflecting his influences ranging from Placebo, Seether and Smashing Pumpkins to Live and Jimmy Eat World. (SS, October 2003)
  • Jo Bangles - Baxtop
By kind permission of Larry Amos
Classic blues-rock from 1979 featuring the duelling guitars of Larry Amos and Tim Parr (who later formed EllaMental with Heather Mac). Bassist Fuzzy Marcus and drummer Bruce Williams went on to form Tribe After Tribe with Robbi Robb.
  • Jou Ma - Thys Nywerheid
Fast and funky electronic breakbeats meet the Afrikaans spoken wisdom of Oom Kallie Marie. And it works, wonderfully. [BC, April 2004]
  • Julia - Khumbula
How to describe this sound? African? Pop? Jazz? Caribbean? Party? Fusion? 'Graceland' without Paul Simon? I give up, but I know it's really cool... take a listen and let me know what you would call it. [BC, April 2003]
  • Just Jinger Sampler - Just Jinger

  • Jy - Die Melktert Kommissie
Chill out to the cool acoustic female-fronted sounds of Die Melkert Kommissie, produced by Valiant Swart.
  • Jy Gee Geboorte Aan Jou Asem/ Blomme Vir Boeddha - Breyten Breytenbach

  • Jy Is Opium (edit) - Valiant Swart

  • Kamakastig Land (live) - Albert Frost

  • Kamakastig Land - Frosted Orange
From 'My Love Is A Leopard', by kind permission of Simon Orange and Rhythm Records
Lenny Kravitz meets Cream in Stellenbosch. Or more accurately: Albert Frost, Simon Orange and Jacques Schutte play guitar and organ driven blues rock with Afrikaans lyrics on this stand-out track from their sophisticated 'My Love Is Leopard' CD. [August 2002]
  • King Of America - Shooflys (featuring Chris Tait)
By kind permission of Street Level

    Kitchener - Piet Botha
A slice of history from SA's favourite rock balladeer. This track is an out-take from 'Die Mamba' CD and is only available as an mp3 download. [SS/BC, June 2004]
  • Kultuurfeestent - Kobus!
A great first track to be released as an mp3 off Kobus!' new album, '100% Skuldgevoelvry'
  • Kuslangs - Myburgh
Another song for the road, but this time its for that slow Sunday drive along the South African coastline. Myburgh sings in Afrikaans over a lightly-strummed 'Wish You Were Here'-style acoustic guitar accompanied by an English-speaking echo who translates the lyrics for us. Very clever and it works. And then there's a cool electric guitar solo as well. On second thoughts this isn't really a driving song, it's a sitting-with-a-bottle-of-wine-and-watching-the-sun-melt-into-the-sea type of song. [BC, November 2003]
  • Kwaito - KGB
