  • The Takeover - Mr Mo featuring Krishna

  • Telefoon Blues - Kop

  • Telephone Ties (Long Time No See) - David Marks
This beautiful and gentle song opens with some superb guitar picking by David Marks and he sings the first verse in a voice that Muff Anderson describes as "kinda sexy and ever so cool". The deep growl of Colin Shamley then takes over the vocals and you're left feeling the pain of not making that simple phone call. Taken off the varied and highly recommended CD 'The Hidden Years', released by David Marks in 1997. And the piano accordian is by the master himself, Nico Carstens. (BC, April 2004)
  • Tell Someone Who Cares (Sampler) - Wonderboom

  • Then It Turns Around - Falling Mirror
Unreleased song recorded in 1986, by kind permission of Falling Mirror and Tully McCully

  • Things To Consider - Skwirmish
The cover of Skwirmish's debut EP has the band emulating that 'Jackass' movie poster, with the three of them hurtling along in an out-of-control shopping trolley. The dynamic punk sound on 'Things 2 Consider', and the other three songs on 'The EP' EP, stay well within the SA punk formula as laid down by Wheatus and formerly adopted by Tweak. That would be young whiny vocals over gnarly guitars that drive the song through more whiplash-inducing time changes then the entire 'Back To The Future' movie trilogy.

But hey, it's what the young punters are bopping to these days and the sheer speed and power of these SA punk bands and their manic music is far better for the kids' ears then Justin Timberface, and the current particularly poor pop posse. So jump aboard the Skwirmish trolley and see where it takes you. [SS, September 2003]
  • Things Were Meant To Be - Chiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro is a cool, new Cape Town group that has been impressing all with their live performances and attractive, new debut album called 'A Definition'. 'Things Were Meant To Be So' is one of the many jazz-tinged pop treats off that album, with Mathlodi Matsei's lovely vocals and philosophical lyrics floating over an infectious piano-led melody. (SS, April 2004)
  • This Is Jesus - Koos van Zyl
"Why should the devil have all the good music?" sang Cliff Richard way back when. Namibian Koos van Zyl takes the blues to the cross, instead of the crossroads on this track off his 'Stay With Me' CD. Great guitar from Wouter de Bruyn who can also be heard on Brian Finch's latest CD 'Never Look Back'. [BC, September 2003]
  • Three Sampler - Sunways

  • Three Words - Luna
    By kind permission of Afrimusik

  • Through The Chaos - Tim Wells

  • Thunder - Brian Finch with Ken E Henson

  • Time - Starseed

  • Time To Change - Grant Nuss
Second single to be released as an mp3 off Grant Nuss' 'Diversity' album. Another smooth ballad from the ex-Durban, now Cape Town-based, singer-songwriter-guitarist with Tom Fox on guitar. [SS, October 2003]
  • Tired - Scarlet Host

  • To Confide In - Lazarus
Lazarus blew us away with their first hit 'Make It Your System' and this new track will do the same. A slow, powerful rocker with a catchy hook, "I need to, I need to, I need to tell you how I feel..." [BC, January 2004]
  • Today - Four Ounce Freedom
From 'Hypnotism' CD, by kind permission of Intervention Arts.

  • Too Dumb To Quit - Too Old To Rock

  • Top Songs 2002 Sampler - Various

  • Trash Like You - Martin Rocka & The Sick Shop
'Trash Like You' is a ballad like nothing you've ever heard. "You were the lady in my luck, now you swing and I duck, and you're no four-leaf clover ..." Hooo boy, you just want to get close and swim through syrup on some dark dance floor. "You used to follow me around, now you worship the ground that I should've been trodden into..." Ahhh, love. So brutal, so honest. (CL, October 2003)
  • Tripping - Curious George
By kind permission of Curious George

  • Troos Van Die Teerpad - Adam Tas

  • Troublesome - Delta Blue
There is no blues like a slow blues... except maybe a fast boogie, and this song is both. Composed by Delta Blue, this is possibly one of the best original blues songs I have heard in a long time, and the competition is really tough. Taken off Delta Blue's superb new CD 'Inbluestation'. [BC, September 2003]
  • Truly Yours - Ananda Vardhana dasa
Something very different, devotional and poppy! Ananada Vardana dasa is from Cape Town and has just released this first CD of original songs called 'What's Life Without Love'. 'Truly Yours' is the first single off the EP and epitomises these songs' uplifting feel and sound, described by the artist as "emotional funk" or "rainbowsound". The CD is dedicated to "freeing our minds, softening our hearts and giving soul comfort. It facilitates the practice of Sacred Sound meditation, in particular that of the Jaya Gauranga mantra and is especially helpful for stress release and making soultime".

'What's Life Without Love' features original songs composed by Andrew Freedman and engineered at the Milestones Studios in Cape Town. The CD was featured at this year's 'Art of Living' festival as well as the 'Celebrate Life' festival, and recently also on 'Free Spirit', a programme on SABC 2.

'What's Life Without Love' is available in selected Musica stores nationwide, at Look & Listen Cape Town stores.

    [SS, August 2003]
  • Tweak Sampler - Tweak
Boy wonders Tweak have released their lastest CD titled 'Dirty Sanchez and the Misfit Kidz'. Micasso has created this sampler of 30 second snippets of highlights from the album. Altogether now, "Tonight we're gonna party, so you better call the F-B-I". And listen out for the classic noisy rock ending. [BC, April 2003]
I was consulted on the creation of this sampler. This is a typical Tweak collection: teen punk rock. Perfect for skateparks... in fact I saw Tweak in concert earlier this year at Boogaloos at Canal Walk. It was awesome. [Curmic, July 2003]
  • Twisted (radio edit) - Believable Addiction
Believable Addiction is a five-piece Pretoria-based band who play "New Age Rock". The band was formed just over a year ago by founding members Jonathan Fagan (bass) and Darren Robert York (lead vocals). The other members of the band are Dian Jordaan (lead guitar), Bunny (rhythm guitar), and Eben The Animal (drums).

BA have signed a publishing deal with EWM Publishing (Saron Gas/Seether's publishers!), received airplay on all their singles, have been featured on the Wicked Rock "Let Us Be Heard" compilation, won a battle of the bands, played alongside bands such as The Narrow, Evenflow, Wonderboom, and Marlow. They recently released their new single, 'Twisted', that was play-listed on most radio stations. Believable Addiction was recently praised by Barney Simon as one of SA's best up-and-coming bands! [SS, October 2003]
  • Two Boots - The Rudimentals

  • Twyfelaar - Battery 9
From Vloek Van Die Kitaar and Strop CDs, by kind permission of Paul Riekert of Battery 9 and Boereplaas Plate.

  • Ugly - Natalia
demo, by kind permission of Natalia.

  • Ugly - Springcan

  • Unity - The Fallen
'Cosmo Girl' went to number 1 on the SAmp3 charts and as it moves down the chart, we have another great song from The Fallen. Strong rhythms and powerful vocals combine to make another hit, I'm sure. [BC, November 2003]
  • Unravished Brides - Lesley Rae Dowling
    By kind permission of Afrimusik

  • Upside Smile - Caytie Marvelis
'Perpetual Groove Motion' is the long awaited album for the funk, groove band Caytie Marvelis, which unfortunately disbanded about a year ago. The group still chose to finish the album, which covers beats from drum and bass, garage, break beat and rock based riffs all into one sound that is uniquely groove.

The concept behind the album is galaxy/space and the universe that is breakbeat. Brotherman has created an album of pure brokenbeat ridden genius, the journey will take you through an amazingly unique and totally original groove all created at Brotherman's beat laboratory Beautiful Muzik. Released and distributed through Two Twiggs Experiment. [SS, April 2004]
  • Vampyre Girl - The Awakening

  • Van Hunks en Die Duiwel (live at Splashy Fen 1991) - Bill Knight

  • Vassit Op Die Vlaktes - SAM
By kind permission of Rhythm Records

  • Viagra La Buena - Nukular Stompers
A Latino-hillbilly paean to the little blue pill that makes you stronger and longer (it says here!). The Nukular Stompers approach the debate around this popular medication with their typical lack of both restraint and decorum. What happens if you give "Sheriff Bush" some Viagra? Apparently he will just get taller! Great fun... (SS, October 2003)
  • Vier By Vier En Visvang - Blomkrag

  • Vier Seisoene Kind - Spinnekop
    By kind permission of Afrimusik

  • Vir Funk En Vaderland - Thys Nywerheid

  • The Voice - Silex
From 'Legendary Beauty' CD, by kind permission of Intervention Arts and Silex.

  • Vreemdeling - Dertien

  • Waiting - Kaal

From 'Of Engines And Earthworms' CD, by kind permission of 3 Speed

  • Waiting For The Dawn - Big Sky
By kind permission of Steve Louw

  • Wake Up - Citizen Jones

  • Wakey Wakey - Constructus
Sounds like Prince and David Bowie having a drunken party in Trent Reznor's garage. Or not. [BC, April 2003]
  • Wanted - Roboto Da Funk

  • War - 12th Avenue
First demo from the band that came third in the recent Last Band Standing competition at the Purple Turtle in Cape Town. But many felt that the band should have placed higher following a strong set that included this impressive first single. Twelfth Avenue are Mark Haze (vocals, guitar), Bradley Masson (drums), Bjorn Faree (guitar) and Pieter Minnie (bass). [SS, June 2003]
  • Warlord - Bill Knight
From 'After The Rinderpest' CD, by kind permission of Bill Knight

  • Warrelwinde - Alta Joubert

  • The Warrior Sampler - Ipi 'NTombi feat. Margaret Singana

  • Wasted Time - Illana May

  • We're Gathered Here Today To Bury Paul - The Radio Rats
From 'Music For Funerals' CD, by kind permission of Jonathan Handley of the Radio Rats

  • What Crap Is That? - Bedrock

  • What Do I Do Now? - Sonja Herholdt

What It Takes To Breathe - Bored
Bored formed in early 1999 in Pietermaritzburg and consist of Mark on vocals and guitar, Brad on bass and Jono on drums. 'What It Takes To Breathe' is a powerful, grunge song that rocks really hard. They have been compared to Seether/ Saron Gas (whom they opened for on that band's SA farewell tour in 2001) and like them they also seem to be able to combine catchy choruses with punchy, crunchy riffs and screamed vocals. Definitely not boring. (BC, April 2004)
  • What Ya Gonna Do? - Mr Mo & G-Steel

  • Wheel Of Fortune - Raven
1979 Uriah Heep-style classic featuring Piet Botha on bass, Doc Barendse on guitars, Dino Salvatori on vocals, the late Derek Riley on drums and Gabi le Roux (renowned for his recent work with Mandoza and other Kwaito stars) on keyboards. Only ever released on a vinyl single from which this mp3 is taken.
  • When I Get The Blues - Delta Blue

  • When I Grow Up (sampler) - Guy Buttery

  • Who Cares (Not Us) - The Buckfever Underground

  • Who Killed Kurt Cobain - Koos Kombuis
By kind permission of Koos Kombuis
Koos Kombuis: vocals/ Anton L'amour: electric and acoustic guitars/ Chris Vermaak: acoustic guitar/ Doris Delay: bass/ Wikus Lombard: drums

A brilliant tribute to Nirvana's Kurt Cobain... it's a crying shame that this song from the 'Madiba Bay' album was never a huge US hit! [September 2002]

  • Wicked Rock Sampler - Various Artists

  • Wide River - David Starke
Dave Starke is a singer/songwriter from Newlands in Cape Town. He played in a few notorious metal bands in high school but started getting into acoustic rock/folk at University and has been writing and composing for a while now. A few years ago he performed fairly regularly at the Barleycorn music club but has made no public appearances recently. His recorded offerings to date are 'Winter' and 'Wide River', both of which were recorded at the London Connection recording studios in 2001 and 2004. Both were produced and engineered by Dane Morkel. [SS, April 2004]
  • Wise Old Me - Koosh

  • Wish You Were Here - Liela

  • Wish You Were Here - November 5

  • Woman - Soil 7T7
This reggae-tinged single is taken from Soil 7T7's self-titled debut album, which was released in March 2003. 'Woman', the hidden track on the album, follows the success of the previous singles 'Mary and Jane', and 'Get Some', which did very well on the SAmp3.com charts earlier this year. [October 2003]
  • Wonderboom 2003 (Sampler) - Wonderboom

  • Wonderaar - Wilde Als
